I think I had a smile on my face all the way into the city, remembering the dinner-party I had the day before and the comments my friends said the night before. I was happy to see them all again, and in a very good mood.

My advisor stopped at my office door to say good morning or something… he stopped, looked at me and the gave me this nice, a bit shy look as the words just flew out of his mouth: “you look really nice today”, and then he rushed off.

I just mumbled “thank you”, I was a bit surprised, but very happy, because the compliment without a doubt came straight from his heart, and his intentions weren’t suspicious in any way (one of the reasons he’s my advisor – been there, done that…).
He was simply being nice, and he surely gave me a good start that Monday morning :o)

I guess I could go on writing my thoughts on how important is to express your appreciation of the people you like, or even love, but I won’t… (Got a job application I need to finish…) I just wanted to share how it really made my (good) day better to get started with a nice compliment like that!

UPDATE

Yes Tommy, it’s been a while since I’ve shared my thoughts.

I’ll try to give an update…

July meant working and trying to figure out what the H… I’m going to do about my professional life. I’ve previously said that working within academia and trying to get to work within is testing my ability to motivate myself, and this time I reached the limit. When august came and my employment ended I just couldn’t find the motivation anymore. I simply didn’t care anymore, and it infected my personal life as well; nothing really mattered anymore. Fortunately I had some money saved for a vacation, and I decided to start the vacation right away, meaning that I stopped working (searching for a job) a week earlier than planned. The weather finally turned from rain to sunshine and I packed my PC and everything in my office into boxes (the department is moving to another location) and left the (damn) building and meet a girlfriend and her son for ice cream :o)
My advisor told me NOT TO THINK about the project and just rest and find my smile again, and I actually succeeded in doing so, and kept the damn project at a distance by telling people (who kindly asked) that I was trying to relax and think about something else and that I really didn’t remember anyway… which turned out to be truth in the end (and a little bit problematic now that I’m trying to get up to speed again) and I had fun and worked hard at relaxing for a few weeks. This means that I’ve spend a lot of hours with my special someone, saw the family, read some old magazines in the sun and just looked into the blue sky while clearing my brain.

Today I’ve been trying to get my act together at do some research for my next application, a slow start I have to admit, but it seems like the right thing. Now I just have to believe that it will happen THIS TIME! I’ve been here before, and it’s a bit hard to convince myself that something is going to happen this time. So that’s the daemon I’m fighting right now and the reason my blog has been left untouched for a while. Well, maybe the number of daemons is more like two… or ten… but you know about some of them and they are a bit to personal to post here…

Have to go; I'm off to fight one of the bastards ;o)

ITU RECEPTION WAS USED AS FITTING ROOM TODAY

Went out for lunch at the new ITU-building today and Louise gave me a tour of the building. It was pretty cool to see the final result when I’ve followed the process from the first draft - and now the buildings there. It felt a bit empty though and I don’t know where everybody’s offices' is anymore, but I'm sure the receptionist will help me until I know what I need to know about the locations.

It was actually quite funny to talk to the receptionist today; she gave med a “gift bag” when I had signed for my new key :o)
The bag consisted of some sponsored bits; finger-table soccer games, key chain, copy card, a pamphlet with practical information about the building. And she gave me a new ITU t-shirt – I have one of the old (and ugly) grey “IT-højskole” t-shirts - this new one is black, the logo discrete and its much nicer! A bit surreal that the first thing I do at the new ITU is to step into the back of the reception an try on t-shirts for size ;o)

I was nice that everybody gave me a warm welcome and took their time to show me their new offices.

The new bar was nice, and I think the students will have some good times here – I can’t possibly be as smoke-filled as the old bar, and the terrace looks like a great place to have a beer on a Friday afternoon, I’ll definitely give it a try this September and report back later… however, the bar might keep its name and the spirit of the fantastic party-committee, but… to me, the bar at Glentevej will always mean something special – and of course the people in it, I miss you guys sometimes... My Good, we had fun at that place :o)

/R

CHAMPAGNE & SUSHI PARTY

Tomorrow it’s time for the first (?) “Executive Champagne & Sushi Party (ECSP)” as the host named it earlier today as we made the final important arrangements; who brings chocolate covered strawberries etc.

I’ve wanted to set up a Champagne Party in my garden for some years now, but I never succeeded and when I mentioned the idea to tomorrows host 2 weeks ago it turned out that he had the same idea AND the initiative to actually set a date, invite people and make it happen. Cool!

Tomorrow it is then. We’ll meet up late afternoon, make the sushi, probably start tasting the bobbles and when the bobbles run out, the plan is that we’ll make some colourful drinks :o)

JUST MY KIND OF PARTY!

I don’t know most of the people who will come tomorrow, but I look forward to meeting new people. I’ve been working at home all week and NEED to mingle with other people by now! Also this working at home hasn’t really been such a success, I’ve been frustrated and stuck in my chapter, but yesterday I finally got my act together and some writing done. Today I’ve been reading a bit, nothing something directly related to the actual subject, but I helped me eliminate some thoughts and now its clear that I don’t want to include this particular perspective anymore.

…

I don’t know why my blog has this tendency towards describing PARTIES. Maybe it's because it's neutral enough to go on a public blog. Maybe I don’t want to sound too boring (wannabe-researcher as I am…)…
It’s also funny that some of the readers of my blog find it when they search for spinning-related issues, I wonder what they think when they get to my blog and read about my nieces, my parties and other strange stuff. I would be cool if some of you “by-chance” readers would leave me a comment, I can’t help wonder who you are..?

Have to go now (yes, you’ve guessed right, spinning class in 30 minutes ;o)

/R

MY NEW PINK & PURPLE “GLOAT-RING”

This weekend we had the traditional TP-tournament (Trivial Pursuit) at some of my best friends apartment. It was a bit sad and sentimental, because they are moving to a house north of Copenhagen (closer to my home, I believe I can bike to their place in 20 minutes or so…) and this was the last get-together at this address – and we’ve countless hours of fun in that apartment!
Anyway, they supplied us, the guests, with plenty of vine (not wanting to move all 130 bottles to their new home) and good food and the game began. Usually we divide different teams – smokers, girls, boys, academic (and we usually get our ass kicked…) and so on. This time we started out playing girls against the boys. And, as you probably have guessed since I’m writing this on my blog; the girl-team WON!

The boys, of course, weren’t very happy with this, and insisted on a rematch. And they wanted to increase the stakes and we all put some money on the table. It was a very exiting game, the boys got of to a good start and the girls didn’t seem to go anywhere… The boys started to gloat and thought they had it made, but that was a mistake. The girls quickly finished the game and left the boys to wonder what just had hit them. And somehow that ended the night, and the boys just wanted to go home ;o)
We shared the winnings, the incredible amount of 120 d.kr, leaving the 3 of us with 40,- to spend each.

And today I bought something to remember the victory. It had to be something I could get for 40,- and something I could wear for the next game (and really stick it to the boys… hey, they started the gloating!) and I ended up buying a new ring, pink and purple.
I’m definitely going to wear this ring when we meet up for the next TP-tournament in their new home!

/R

I DID IT!

- got out of bed at 05.45, ate a quick breakfast and was ready on the bike for a morning spinning class at 06.15!!

Jihaaa!!!

/R

BRITNEY SPEARS AND ME

Inspired by Louise’s dream about Britney and their conversation on Latex-use [giggle] and my recent live Britney experience (Britney's recent concert in Forum, Copenhagen), I’ve listened to her new album a few times. And I have to admit that the erotic message in the lyrics and music is CRYSTAL CLEAR to me now (guess I didn’t listen the right way before…). Britney’s erotic stageshow somehow makes sense now (ok, I guess I need to admit that I was a little embarrassed at the concert, because I didn’t realise that Madonna had had that kind of influence on the girl… ohm, Woman! I hope no 12-year old was to chocked after the show... I know the 3 guys in their early twenties standing next to me REALLY ENJOYED THE SHOW!). Anyway, her new album is REALLY good, and gets better every time you listen to it, if you like the erotic-techno style anyway.

My favourite song is Breathe on me. I hope my favourite spinning instructor will discover it and play it soon, I’m sure it will help me forget about the pain and start to smile ;o)

You need to hear the music, but here’s the lyrics:

--------------------
Breathe on me
--------------------
It's so hot in here.

Ohh, it's so hot, and I need some air.
Oh boy, don't stop 'cuz I'm halfway there.
It's not complicated, it's just syncopated,
We can read each other's minds.
One love united,
Two bodies synchronizing,
Don't even need to touch me,
Baby, just...

(Chorus)
Breathe on me.
Baby just, breathe on me.
We don't need to touch, just
breathe...

Ohh, this is way beyond the physical (it's a way beyond the physical).
Tonight, my senses don't make sense at all.
Our imagination, takin' us to places,
We have never been before.
Take me in, let it out,
Don't even need to touch me,
Baby, just...

(Chorus)

(Whispers)
Monogamy is the way to go,
Just put your lips together... and blow.
--------------------

The song and music definitely does something to me because all I can think about after listening is: I WANT THIS!! PLEASE! SOMEBODY PLEASE: BREATHE ON ME!

Guess I’m ready for love!

Wishing you all a hot and sunny summer!

/R
[who has to return to her job: exploring the construction-industry… not as bad as it sounds, but THERE’S A REASON for my sudden Britney-addiction – I need some more pink in this world of hard-hats and seriousness. ]

--------------------
Or maybe I’m just looking to boost my blogs hit-rate by mentioning Britney Spears in my header ;o)

THE THING ABOUT CHOICE

As you might have noticed I’ve been riding the good wave of life for a while now, and I’ve realised that there’s a distinct pattern to the Good Life that always leaves me in dilemmas.
– fortunately the good kind of dilemmas…

The pattern that I’ve identified is, that good things always seem to come in pairs, and its up to me to choose. Apparently you can’t have two cakes and eat both of them… And the damn thing about making this choice is that it is up to YOU to decide which cake you’re not going to eat. This means that you have to stick to your choice once you’ve decided and not live you’re life regretting that you missed out and the only one to blame is yourself.

How come you always meet two great guys at the same time… or get two job-offers at the same time… or even get to choose between two cute kittens…

Is this God’s, or the Universe, way to force me to reflect on life changing decisions and not just run about and live intuitively and randomly – and happily?

Or am I just kidding myself in thinking that I have anything to say in the matter of my life’s destiny?

I know that I always end up deciding by heart and not cool rationale – and isn’t the whole dilemma of choice really just an academic exercise to keep my brain busy?

Madonna's right: life is a mystery!

ADMISSION
I’ve been told that it was quite obvious that I was terrified on that motorcycle ride, so I guess the poetic description of the ride wasn’t quite right…

OK, I admit it; the main part of the ride, I was paralysed by fear and hanging on as best I could… guess someone has the black bruises to show for it ;o)

But in the end I REALLY enjoyed it!!! But last week the whether finally ‘warmed’ up, and I spend some hours in the garden, listening to Linked by Albert-Laszlo Barabasi (a book about networks, social-, computer-, … all kinds of networks) on my Mp3-player, while preparing the garden for this season. As usual I have a lot of different flowers at my parents greenhouse, and – as usual – the tiny little plants have been ready to grow in my garden for a while… I just haven’t been ready to plant them…
But now I’m slowly getting there, and hopefully my garden will explode with colours in a month or so.

Anyway, yesterday I had booked a special spinning-class at my fitness centre. It’s a bank-holiday and the normal program has been replaced by this special program. I decided that if I wanted to work out, this was my best option. But when I got there it turned out that the usual one hour spinning lesson was, due to the bank holiday, extended to one hour and thirty minutes!! Oh my God! Of course, once you’re at the centre, on the bike and ready for some exercise, you just go along with the program… And I proud to say that I completed the lesson without vomiting, fainting or somehow falling of the bike… Today I feel fine, but the back of me knees (??) are hurting a bit. I really thing I’ve found a form of exercise that I can get addicted to. I was is such a good mood all day, tired, but high on endorphins – guess 1½ hour of pain REALLY gives you a kick ;o)

Of course there was a bit of adrenaline in my bloodstream too. A … ‘good friend’… showed up on his super cool Honda and offered me a ride. The first few minutes I was absolutely TERRIFIED, but after a while I decided that I just had to trust him and I seemed that he knew what he was doing and I started to enjoy the speed, the moves and being so close to him, moving with him… I was like a dance … or maybe good sex ;o) I didn’t get any work done in my garden or any of the other things I had planned, but… who cares, it was worth it! (…and it just means that I have to work today, but my knees are hurting and I don’t mind some doing some studying after this action packed day…)

Wow, look at the time, I just wanted to post this before going to lunch with one of my girlfriends who I haven’t seen for ages – she’s busy taking care of her wonderful little son (9 months old) and we just haven’t been able to see each other for months it seems. I better go then…

AUNT AGAIN !!

Yesterday my sister gave birth to a beautiful little girl :o) Now I have 2 cute little nieces :o)

My sister is a tough woman; she didn’t make it to the delivery room, but gave birth at home, her husband assisting her while calling an ambulance. Now it seams the “oranges” has tuned in on me again and someone is throwing them – and lots of the – hard at my turban! (I don’t know if this idiom translates, but it means that my luck has changed and opportunity is knocking HARD at my door!)
Seems that some of the people in my network remembers me and when they see opportunity, they act on if and push it my way. I’m grateful and very happy right now. And somewhat put in a dilemma…

But, everything has to be placed in a certain perspective, and my perspective on the world has changed a bit (something this Cry Baby needed!)…

I recently had my first experience as a “Domsmand” (a civil citizen who assists in the judgement of criminals along with the appointed judges). I’ve signed up for this duty because I feel obligated to be an active participant in the democracy I’m fortunate enough to live in. I know it might sound very idealistic (and maybe hard to believe), by I actually try to “practice what I preach” and I’ve always felt lucky to live in such a great country as Denmark. (Except maybe when I have a hard time finding a job and consider Australia as my new home… the forms ARE printed! Or if the Danes act to spoiled and narrow-minded… I actually don’t mind the weather (!) but I was born and raised on a farm in the countryside… besides, I’ve always kind of liked rain…) Today is a beautiful sunny day (a bit windy though…) and May is absolutely my favourite time of year!
Anyway… I’ve been joking a bit about this “judge-duty” I have… and extra source of income (bribe…) and my chance to get back at that pickpocket who stole my wallet last year… As I’ve experienced before; it rarely turns out the way you planned it in real life… And the case that I took part in was not a “funny” little experience… It was a tragedy and it was ugly! My role in it (actually being part of the judgement, deciding the punishment and being part of deciding that another human gets to spend several years behind bars…) was a life-changing experience. I guess I’m not as naive and blue-eyed any more…
I have to share some more on this experience, but now I have to go. I’m going for dinner a friend and some of her friends, and I’ll just LOVE to talk about something else that research (after the intense week of PhD-summer school last week…) and today’s great brainstorm with my supervisor.

Until then; take care of eachother out there! …and PLEASE be good to the children, they need us to love and protect them!

MISC….

Hmmm… it’s been a while since the police party 2.0 and I guess I’m not really in the mood to write about it here… but IT WAS A LOT OF FUN! And apparently a concept new girls easily adjust to (concept being: girls night out, drinks and “men in uniforms”, simple and fun) – I was the only participant from the first night, and the girls picked it up right away!! Guess Madonna, Cosmopolitans, Sushi and party-crazed girls are the perfect ingredients for a night out…
As you can probably read from my list of good things, I meet one of those great dancers – a total stranger – but a connection was made and we had fun for a while (his friends dragged him of way to soon!), but I got to dance and sing my heart out (no voice to speak of the next day…)

It’s bee a while since I’ve updated my blog… I don’t know why, maybe the fact that GulBil had to go to the Shop (EXPENSIVE love affair…!) and that I’ve been busy getting this research assistant job (fingers crossed) and… well spending a lot of time with this guy I’ve meet…

Tonight I’ve invited my parents for dinner – roast lamb (in the oven as I write this) and hopefully my father will enjoy the food, even if it is spicy, and they’ll behave and not be at each others throats all night ;o) Grumpy old parents! They behaved when I visited them for lunch today, and I invited them on impulse – its been a long time since I’ve made them dinner. And I have been working a home today, doing a bit of cleaning and drinking beer in the sun at my neighbour’s terrace, quite nice…

Yesterday Pernelle and I went to see “Monster” – thought provoking! Actually we shouldn’t have gone to the movies because it seen like ages since I’ve last seen her and I really missed talking to her. But I enjoyed her company, and hope I’ll see her soon!

Hmmm, something’s starting to smell really nice, I better go check on that lamb…

5 THINGS THAT MAKES MY LIFE BETTER:
· GulBil (my car) – in a word (as if one word can cover this love story): mobility
· Strangers you meet in the night who loves to dance, are good at it and doesn’t misunderstand the “connection” and try to score - please just keep sending them my way
· My titanium Maui Jim sunglasses – perfect for driving and the first pair of sunglasses I can keep in my hair AND GET OUT AGAIN without too much trouble
· My laptop – has changed the way I work at home…and the use of my sofa
· Pop music –makes me happy

The list isn’t prioritised and I’ll probably write something else if I had to do it again tomorrow…

I also have to tell you about our girls night out – police party 2.0 – but… you’ll just have to wait another day or two, I’m still to busy giggling ;o)

EASTER BREAK??

Whats new?

Well, I worked all through the Easter break – I had to finish a paper and I had a HARD time getting started on in, but actually it wasn’t that bad once I got started. And with great help from a good friend I’m not too embarrassed to send it of.

Ok, maybe it wasn’t all work… My brother celebrated his birthday on Sunday and got a birthday present from his sisters and mother that he really loved… not! I hope he will in time, but maybe this will teach him to give us some more realistic wishes next time – then we’ll try to give him something he actually wants ;o) “Get a bank loan” he said, brat!
And I’ve spend a lot of hours with this little girl in TOTALLY IN LOVE with! I anyone makes me happy these days it’s her! Being an aunt is just the greatest thing in the world!

Yesterday I went to the movies with 2 good friends, we saw Mona Lisa Smile, and Jam said that it was a girl-movie – I really liked it, so I guess he was right. After the movie we went to Louise’s apartment for coffee, its right in the centre of the city, cool! She such a city chick that girl! I guess it will be at cool place to start our “girls night out” next weekend!! ;o)

By the way (I know someone in Holland will appreciate this) I’ve also painted my living room walls bright white this Easter. About time too… The good thing was that I did it while listening to audio books – The 5th Dicipline by Peter Senge – really good – gave me the inspiration I needed to get started on that (damn) paper. And Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy – and this book… I don’t know, I guess there’s just too much word juggling and I don’t think it’s al that funny… I guess I think the author is trying too hard, and that’s a bit boring to me. Try to be less explicit, please! I’m only half way through and I don’t even know if I’ll ever finish it, but at least I know what all the fuss was about… not me, too damn boring!

By the way, I can recommend the online audio bookstore audible.com!

Now I’ll go have coffee with Louise...

THE ART OF SUPERVISION

Today I had a meeting with my supervisor – we’re applying for funding of my project, and it seems that maybe we’ve been a bit over-optimistic about the deadline… but even if we don’t make it, the process has given me a lot of energy and motivation, and today I REALLY SHOULD have brought my digital voice recorder (fancy little piece of technology) because he was just sparkling with inspiration and pushing information on to me. I tried to follow as good as I could, while slowly getting this good and warm feeling in my stomach; this it the right direction we’re going! And: “goddamn, I’ve missed being supervised!”.

The meeting was an excellent example of how supervision works at its best. Not only did he inspire me, but he also lifted my ideas to a new level (which they desperately need if this is going to qualify as a research project) and gently corrected my mistakes.

After researching this “new” angle a bit further - finding some new articles to read - I’m still filled with the belief that this is right, and that the project could be GREAT!

Cool!

THE POWER OF NETWORKS
I’ve been reading a thesis done by some of the students I ”teach” and I have to react on it and make a blog positing, because it was such a heart warming experience.
I’ve followed their process from the beginning to end (if this is the end, I don’t think so…), and they have inspired my own thoughts greatly I the process. Maybe that’s why it made me so happy and proud to see that some of my thoughts from my master thesis were included in their work; that they give me credit and that the hours I spend years ago trying to make my thoughts “sharable” by writing notes and distributing these thoughts – in notes or teaching/conversations – has actually made a difference to somebody. Due to different circumstances I don’t have a lot of people to collaborate with in this area right now, and as a hardcore Networker I have shared these thoughts with A LOT of people, but no reactions to speak of came from it. And that was A BIT discouraging… It made me fear that everybody just hoard information in a sneaky and unengaged way… not to constructive (and I hate that!)…

But reading this thesis… Wow!

And realising that I was on the right path back then, gives me the courage to move forward once again. Especially when I see the EXCELLENT work they have done! Much better than my own thesis!

I also have to work harder on getting a new network of people engaged within this area; it’s simply a necessity for my level of motivation and quality of thoughts (and action…)!

Right then, back to the “lab” ;o)

NATURAL HIGH
Right now I’m slowly ”coming down” again after a natural high – the spinning lessons in my local fitness centre always leaves me feeling a bit high! Now I'm located at the “quiet Floor”, which I good in the way that I’m able to listen to my music (pop) while working and I have a lot of wall space for arranging all my little sticky notes with my thoughts and ideas… But I guess the academic environment is just too lonely and quiet for me; I need the inspiration and motivation from socialising with other people to get some work done and to remind me that the academic work has a value.
Therefore I try to get out of the office as much as I can.

Today I went to a lecture arranged by the company I wrote my Master Thesis about. And once more the culture, the atmosphere – I’m not quite sure – but SOMETHING always gives me energy and inspiration when I meet up with them! Today’s meeting was no exception. Maybe its because I feel that they confirm my thoughts, and that gives me the confidence to hang on too what I believe and what I wish to do. I arranged a meeting with them next week, and I really look forward to starting up the dialogue once more… the last year has been… well, HARD! And one of the major reasons for that has been the absence of dialogue with people like them. I really miss that! Actually, I’m afraid I NEED that, I’ve been feeling dead in a way for a very long time, and now it feels like the colours are reappearing in my life. It’s a bit drastic to use this metaphor, I know, but none the less true. When one of the people I meet today said that she probably could help me get the project/job/whatever of my dreams, but she was afraid that I wouldn’t move (to Jylland…) to get it, it just said, “no, if that’s what it takes, then I'm ready. That’s how much I want this!” Wow, as soon I said it the words out loud, I knew that I actually meant them! With all my friends, family and network here, it’s a bit frightening to move away and start over, and I’ve always said that I’d rather move to Sydney (my absolute favourite place outside DK) than Aarhus… But… Maybe… I don’t know if there is a concrete possibility or anything in Jylland, but the thought and the willingness to explore if there is, is a bit mind-blowing… (But thats just me - it's only 3 hours from Copenhagen... and I have family there who I know will welcome me...)

Anyway… more info will follow as soon as I know more.

Now I’ll go home with these happy thoughts… I’m having a special guest for Dinner tomorrow and I need to clean up a little bit tonight ;o)

Just testing the concept of having a blog...

Today I've had a lot of fun translating my name - and my friends names - into elvish or hobbit.

I quite like my elvish name, although it made one of my frinds on MSN wonder if I had converted to Islam ;o) I've decidet to keep the name anyway!

My Elvish name is: Órelindë Melwasúl
and the hobbit-version: Goldie Gamwich of the Bree Gamwiches

NICE!!

The link is as follows:
http://www.chriswetherell.com/elf/Default.asp

Enough fun allready - I better get back to work...
